They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch’s hilarious impressions of each other, flattery must go off the charts. The Doctor Strange actor recalled meeting Holland for the first time at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere. He gave a hilarious imitation of the Spider-Man actor, but then Tom Holland got his chance to do an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Benedict Cumberbatch did an impression of Tom Holland at the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ premiere
Jacob Batalon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya arrived at the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere and snapped some pictures with the star of Doctor Strange and Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch.
“It’s crazy to be on set with [actors] this young, this talented, and this generous and kind, and every day is a very lively, lovely, energized and focused and brilliant to watch day,” Cumberbatch said about Holland to ET. “We know each other well, we’re two Brits who are having the rides of our lives, and it’s fun to share a little bit of it with him. I’m really proud of him.”
The future Doctor Strange 2 star recalled when they met with a hilarious impression of the Spider-Man cast lead.
“He’s younger than me, like I said before, to get to see him, and the first moment [I met him], I remember him bounding across the concrete at Longcross, we had to shoot a lot of Marvel stuff in England, and he went “‘Ello, I’m Tom, I’ve just been cast to do Spider-Man!’ and I was like ‘Wow, congratulations, that’s amazing!’”
And Cumberbatch has been pushed to do impressions of Holland in more interviews for Spider-Man: No Way Home and even for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Holland finally got his chance to retaliate.
Tom Holland did an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch calling him ‘darling’
After discussing a possible cameo with Zendaya on Euphoria, the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show host said that Cumberbatch does an incredible impression of Him. She wanted to know if Tom Holland could do an impression of Benedict Cumberbatch around the
“Uh, okay, Benedict Cumberbatch,” Holland prepared himself. “‘Oh Tom, darling, would you like to run the lines before we start shooting, darling?’”
Holland did his best to lower his voice and capture the charm that comes from the Sherlock star. The host laughed, calling the impression of the Sorcerer Supreme actor ‘spot on.’
You can hear the Peter Parker actor voicing his impression around the 2:28:10 mark.
The ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ star said the Doctor Strange actor nailed his ‘energy’
In another interview, Jacob Batalon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya appeared to talk with BBC Radio 1. He asked the Spider-Man: No Way Home stars if they saw Benedict Cumberbatch impersonating Tom Holland, and the Peter Parker actor had a few notes.
“I have seen Benedict impersonating me,” Holland admitted. “And actually, it’s not that bad. He hasn’t got the accent or the voice, but he’s got the energy.”
MJ’s actor Zendaya jumped in, saying she can’t impersonate Holland, but she can imitate his Peter Parker. Batalon admitted that he tried to talk like Holland, but it just sounded like a “generic British person,” according to Zendaya.
Now someone needs to ask Andrew Garfield to do an impression of his Spider-Man: No Way Home co-stars. Then the trifecta of British actors impersonating each other will be complete.

Hundefreundliches Hotel Villa Orange
Viele Hundewiesen in Frankfurt
Restaurant Sampan: Asiatisch essen gehen

Hundefreundliches Hotel Villa Orange
Viele Hundewiesen in Frankfurt
Restaurant Sampan: Asiatisch essen gehen

The previously unrecorded behavior occurs in the larvae of a species of lined flat bark beetle (Laemophloeus biguttatus). Specifically, the larvae are able to spring into the air, with each larva curling itself into a loop as it leaps forward. What makes these leaps unique is how the larvae are able to pull it off.
“Jumping at all is exceedingly rare in the larvae of beetle species, and the mechanism they use to execute their leaps is — as far as we can tell — previously unrecorded in any insect larvae,” says Matt Bertone, corresponding author of a paper on the discovery and director of North Carolina State University’s Plant Disease and Insect Clinic.
While there are other insect species that are capable of making prodigious leaps, they rely on something called a “latch-mediated spring actuation mechanism.” This means that they essentially have two parts of their body latch onto each other while the insect exerts force, building up a significant amount of energy. The insect then unlatches the two parts, releasing all of that energy at once, allowing it to spring off the ground.
“What makes the L. biguttatus so remarkable is that it makes these leaps without latching two parts of its body together,” Bertone says. “Instead, it uses claws on its legs to grip the ground while it builds up that potential energy — and once those claws release their hold on the ground, that potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, launching it skyward.”
The discovery of the behavior was somewhat serendipitous. Bertone had collected a variety of insect samples from a rotting tree near his lab in order to photograph them when he noticed that these beetle larvae appeared to be hopping.
Bertone and paper co-author Adrian Smith then decided to film the behavior in order to get a better look at what was going on. That’s when they began to understand just how peculiar the behavior was. Smith is a research assistant professor of biological sciences at NC State and head of the Evolutionary Biology & Behavior Research Lab at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.
“The way these larvae were jumping was impressive at first, but we didn’t immediately understand how unique it was,” Bertone says. “We then shared it with a number of beetle experts around the country, and none of them had seen the jumping behavior before. That’s when we realized we needed to take a closer look at just how the larvae was doing what it was doing.”
To determine how L. biguttatus was able to execute its acrobatics, the researchers filmed the jumps at speeds of up to 60,000 frames per second. This allowed them to capture all of the external movements associated with the jumps, and suggested that the legs were essentially creating a latching mechanism with the ground.
The researchers also conducted a muscle mass assessment to determine whether it was possible for the larvae to make their leaps using just their muscles, as opposed to using a latch mechanism to store energy. They found that the larvae lacked sufficient muscle to hurl themselves into the air as far or as fast as they had been filmed jumping. Ergo, latching onto the ground was the only way the larvae could pull off their aerial feats.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated video about jumping maggots, Smith had included a short clip of the jumping behavior in L. biguttatus. That video was seen by a researcher in Japan named Takahiro Yoshida, who had witnessed similar jumps in the larvae of another beetle species called Placonotus testaceus, but had not published anything related to the behavior.
“We don’t have high-speed footage of P. testaceus, but the video evidence we do have from Yoshida’s lab suggests that this previously unknown behavior is found in two different genera which are not even closely related,” Bertone says.
“This raises a lot of questions. Has this behavior evolved separately? Is it found in other beetle species? Are these genera more closely related than we previously suspected? There’s a lot of interesting work to be done here.”

EXCLUSIVE: A new survey published today on the state of the UK’s independent production sector has revealed the harsh challenges being faced by the country’s indie producers.
Among the eye-opening findings are that 75% of independent film producer respondees who have made 1-2 feature films earned less than $7,800 (£6,000) per year over the past five years for their film producing work. Of those who have made 5-10 feature films, 67% still earned less than $19,500 (£15,000) per year over the past five years from producing their projects.
The survey was conducted by UK producer-supporting advocacy group the Producers’ Roundtable in association with union Pact and has been backed by the majority of the UK’s major films orgs including the BFI, Film4, BBC Films, and several significant indie producers.
The survey also showed that 53% of independent film producers said they had given up their fee multiple times to get their films made, with 77% saying they had done this at least once.
Further findings included that 30% of BAFTA nominated/winning independent film producers who responded earned less than $13,000 (£10,000) over the past two years for their film producing work.
It also noted that of the respondees, 31% attended private school (compared to 6.5% of people in the UK).
In total, 83% of independent film producers think being an indie producer in the UK today is “not sustainable”.
The Producers’ Roundtable, which was established by rising producers Loran Dunn, Sophie Reynolds and Helen Simmons and has more than 100 members, is now touting potential solutions to the problem.
You can read these in full below, but the guidelines call on private financiers, sales agents, talent and lit agents, distributors, writers, directors, and other gatekeepers to support a series of measures to create a more sustainable industry.
Those include fixing the producers’ fee on any film budgeted below $3.9m (£3m) at a minimum of 8%, reducing the amount of fee deferrals, and stipulating that producers are not cut out of creative discussions with the film’s talent.
See-Saw Films’ Hakan Kousetta and Moon producer Nicky Bentham, who co-chair Pact’s film policy group, both said they were “strongly in favour” of the guidelines.
“This research from the Producers’ Roundtable reinforces what we’ve known for a long time. The British indie film industry is not sustainable without a proper recognition of the value of the producer and Pact is strongly in favour of these industry-produced guidelines. For too long producers have been diminished and expected to have only the crumbs left on the table. If we want a diverse, inclusive and incentivised independent film sector then there needs to be a dramatic shift from the old attitudes,” Kousetta and Bentham jointly commented.
Rose Garnett, Director of BBC Films, also said that the guidelines “broadly reflect our current position”.
“BBC Films supports filmmakers, by which we mean producers as much as writers and directors, at every stage of their careers. We’ve enjoyed a productive dialogue with the Producers’ Roundtable and we fully support their aim to make producing a more sustainable and inclusive career for all – in fact their suggestions broadly reflect our current position,” Garnett said.
The survey was sent out across the biz and results were drawn from a total of 149 responses.
It follows last week’s publishing of the latest batch of BFI stats relating to production activity on these shores. On one hand, there is more money than ever in the biz, with a continued surge of inward investment leading to record levels of money being spent on production. On the other, the growth is entirely in non-UK projects, and the country’s homegrown producers are not feeling the benefit – UK domestic film production was down a staggering 45% in 2019 on the previous year.
Also responding to the findings, Film4 Director Daniel Battsek said, “We recognize, from working regularly with them, the challenges independent producers face in the early part of their careers. It’s in everyone’s interests that our industry produces a variety of stories from a broad range of storytellers, in order to keep audiences coming to cinemas. Film4 support the Producers’ Roundtable’s aims and will work with our production partners to help steer the wider industry towards adopting these guidelines.”
Soon-to-be BFI CEO Ben Roberts added, “Independent producers are key in ensuring cultural diversity in our filmmaking, and in working closely with them we’re aware of the continued challenges they face. We have welcomed contributing to the Producers’ Roundtable and they have helped us ensure that our guidelines remain as supportive as possible.”
Warp Films, which produced Four Lions and ’71, said that to create “a diverse and sustainable independent film industry”, producers must be “supported and paid fairly”.
“The producers we are talking about are not at the very beginning of their careers, they are three, five, ten years in. They are being supported by public and private financiers here in the UK and abroad and are receiving accolades for their work. And yet, still, they are struggling to make a living,” explained Producers’ Roundtable founder Dunn.
“It is important to recognise the privileged background that is required to live on such a low income for so many years. As a collective we recognize that many of the surveyed producers have only been able to stay in the game for so long because of other sources of wealth. We want to change that,” Simmons added.
“Our survey shows that this is an industry which expects its producers to work for very little. We want to ask why this has been acceptable for so long and how we can make producing a career that is viable for a far wider pool of talented individuals, many of whom may come from lower socio-economic backgrounds,” Reynolds said.
The Producers’ Roundtable guidelines:
1) In order for production companies and producers to be able to sustain themselves, and the writers and directors they work with, we recommend the production fee on any film under $3.9m (£3m) should be no less than 8% of the direct costs of production, to be divided between the producer(s) and production company(ies) as the lead producer sees fit.
2) Deferral of producer fees for development or production should not be encouraged, endorsed or suggested by any financier or their representatives, and the Producers’ Roundtable strongly encourages producers not to defer any of their fees, instead finding alternative solutions and savings within the budget. Most producers have already deferred their fees during the development of the project, and even successful features which find an audience are unlikely to see a return at the back end for the producer themselves, making fees pivotal.
3) Given the importance of talent relationships and transparency across the board, as well as a need to not undermine the fundamental role of the producer, especially at an early stage of their career, the producer must be involved in all meetings and correspondence with the writer or director, pertaining to the shared project. Financiers must not meet with the writer or director, specifically about the shared project, except as organised and attended by the producer(s). This should be the case during the consideration of the project, during development and production, and during the project’s initial exploitation.
4) No production financier may participate in net profits from the producer pool of net profits, even in the event of receiving a producer credit; this must be reserved only for the filmmakers.
5) Given the importance of film festivals in promoting and selling a film, and in career progression for all filmmakers involved, it is vital that the producer of a film is supported in attending its premiere, equal to the director, especially as salaried executive producers are often paid to attend themselves. We therefore encourage sales agents to make sure the producer is always tied to the director in attendance of any international and UK premiere of the film, including their travel, accommodation and accreditation expenses. We hope financiers will also encourage and financially support this move.

Sardinia is a territory that offers everything you could want for a holiday that needs to be structured. Beaches, sea and fun for those who want to spend unforgettable summers, nature trails for those who love trekking, ancient monuments such as nuraghi or dolmens for those who love archeology and then monuments of architectural interest, Unesco sites and much more. Getting there is very simple: just book a route of the Sardinia ferries, this year they really find it at all prices. Every day is perfect for visiting the island, in fact the mild and Mediterranean climate offers a pleasant temperature all year round.
Ten stops to do in Sardinia
In Sardinia every corner of the island has its own peculiarity. It is impossible to describe the island in an article but indicating some stops is certainly useful to facilitate the preparation of a complete itinerary.
Capo Nieddu. Credit Eleonora Casula
1. Cala Luna: one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, in Ogliastra, must be a stop on any trip to Sardinia. In summer for a splendid dip in the sea, in winter, autumn and spring for a nice excursion by land. 2. Capo Nieddu: on the west coast, a splendid waterfall on the sea. The water of a stream falls into the sea with a jump of 40 meters. Very special and beautiful to look at. Attention: in the months of July and August there is no. 3. Badde Salighes: a beautiful forest in the heart of Sardinia, in Bolotana, where you can admire more than one hundred year old yews. 4. Barumini: Unesco site where you can admire one of the best preserved nuraghe of the island. 5. goats: to discover those strange statues of giants, unique of their kind in all of Europe. 6. Montevecchio: to discover the industrial archeology of a place where for a long time the mine was a real economic wealth. 7. Goni: to the city of the sun, a mystical and mysterious place, where ancient stones recall the roots of an almost unknown civilization. 8. Roccadoria Monteleone: ancient medieval village perched on top of a hill where, they say, the sun never sets. 9. Saint Maurus: geographical center of Sardinia, with a beautiful late medieval sanctuary. 10. Arborea: to take a dip in the 1920s and discover a corner of Sardinia that seems to be Veneto.
What to eat in Sardinia
The island offers excellent dishes: if you are lucky enough to choose the lesser known trattorias you can really taste something exceptional. In the Oristano area it is a must to try ma Mreca, a way of cooking mullet, while in the province of Nuoro it is good to think of the roast suckling pig called procedure. It is peculiar and difficult to find Su Filindeu, a hand-made pasta to be tasted with sheep broth, a real delight, just as you can not end a meal without seadas nor should you avoid toasting with a glass of Vernaccia or myrtle. The food in Sardinia is truly excellent and, for some time now, in some farmhouses it is even possible to learn a few recipes and then be able to try them after returning from holidays. A trip to Sardinia is a dive into a reality different from the rest of the country where traditions, customs and flavors are still those of the past.

Zhen Q. Wang, Heng Song, Edward J. Koleski, Noritaka Hara, Dae Sung Park, Gaurav Kumar, Yejin Min, Paul J. Dauenhauer, Michelle C. Y. Chang. A dual cellular–heterogeneous catalyst strategy for the production of olefins from glucose. Nature Chemistry, 2021; DOI: 10.1038/s41557-021-00820-0
Making those chemicals biologically is the obvious option, but microbial products are different from fossil fuel hydrocarbons in two key ways: They contain too much oxygen, and they have too many other atoms hanging off the carbons. In order for microbial hydrocarbons to work in existing synthetic processes, they often have to be de-oxygenated — in chemical parlance, reduced — and stripped of extraneous chemical groups, all of which takes energy.
A team of chemists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota has now engineered microbes to make hydrocarbon chains that can be deoxygenated more easily and using less energy — basically just the sugar glucose that the bacteria eat, plus a little heat.
The process allows microbial production of a broad range of chemicals currently made from oil and gas — in particular, products like lubricants made from medium-chain hydrocarbons, which contain between eight and 10 carbon atoms in the chain.
“Part of the issue with trying to move to something like glucose as a feedstock for making molecules or to drive the chemical industry is that the fossil fuel structures of petrochemicals are so different — they’re usually fully reduced, with no oxygen substitutions,” said Michelle Chang, UC Berkeley professor of chemistry and of chemical and biomolecular engineering. “Bacteria know how to make all these complex molecules that have all these functional groups sticking out from them, like all natural products, but making petrochemicals that we’re used to using as precursors for the chemical industry is a bit of a challenge for them.”
“This process is one step towards deoxygenating these microbial products, and it allows us to start making things that can replace petrochemicals, using just glucose from plant biomass, which is more sustainable and renewable,” she said. “That way we can get away from petrochemicals and other fossil fuels.”
The bacteria were engineered to make hydrocarbon chains of medium length, which has not been achieved before, though others have developed microbial processes for making shorter and longer chains, up to about 20 carbons. But the process can be readily adapted to make chains of other lengths, Chang said, including short-chain hydrocarbons used as precursors to the most popular plastics, such as polyethylene.
She and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Nature Chemistry.
A bioprocess to make olefins
Fossil hydrocarbons are simple linear chains of carbon atoms with a hydrogen atom attached to each carbon. But the chemical processes optimized for turning these into high-value products don’t easily allow substitution by microbially produced precursors that are oxygenated and have carbon atoms decorated with lots of other atoms and small molecules.
To get bacteria to produce something that can replace these fossil fuel precursors, Chang and her team, including co-first authors Zhen Wang and Heng Song, former UC Berkeley postdoctoral fellows, searched databases for enzymes from other bacteria that can synthesize medium-chain hydrocarbons. They also sought an enzyme that could add a special chemical group, carboxylic acid, at one end of the hydrocarbon, turning it into what’s called a fatty acid.
All told, the researchers inserted five separate genes into E. coli bacteria, forcing the bacteria to ferment glucose and produce the desired medium-chain fatty acid. The added enzymatic reactions were independent of, or orthogonal to, the bacteria’s own enzyme pathways, which worked better than trying to tweak the bacteria’s complex metabolic network.
“We identified new enzymes that could actually make these mid-size hydrocarbon chains and that were orthogonal, so separate from fatty acid biosynthesis by the bacteria. That allows us to run it separately, and it uses less energy than it would if you use the native synthase pathway,” Chang said. “The cells consume enough glucose to survive, but then alongside that, you have your pathway chewing through all the sugar to get higher conversions and a high yield.”
That final step to create a medium-chain fatty acid primed the product for easy conversion by catalytic reaction to olefins, which are precursors to polymers and lubricants.
The UC Berkeley group collaborated with the Minnesota group led by Paul Dauenhauer, which showed that a simple, acid-based catalytic reaction called a Lewis acid catalysis (after famed UC Berkeley chemist Gilbert Newton Lewis) easily removed the carboxylic acid from the final microbial products — 3-hydroxyoctanoic and 3-hydroxydecanoic acids — to produce the olefins heptene and nonene, respectively. Lewis acid catalysis uses much less energy than the redox reactions typically needed to remove oxygen from natural products to produce pure hydrocarbons.
“The biorenewable molecules that Professor Chang’s group made were perfect raw materials for catalytic refining,” said Dauenhauer, who refers to these precursor molecules as bio-petroleum. “These molecules contained just enough oxygen that we could readily convert them to larger, more useful molecules using metal nanoparticle catalysts. This allowed us to tune the distribution of molecular products as needed, just like conventional petroleum products, except this time we were using renewable resources.”
Heptene, with seven carbons, and nonene, with nine, can be employed directly as lubricants, cracked to smaller hydrocarbons and used as precursors to plastic polymers, such as polyethylene or polypropylene, or linked to form even longer hydrocarbons, like those in waxes and diesel fuel.
“This is a general process for making target compounds, no matter what chain length they are,” Chang said. “And you don’t have to engineer an enzyme system every time you want to change a functional group or the chain length or how branched it is.”
Despite their feat of metabolic engineering, Chang noted that the long-term and more sustainable goal would be to completely redesign processes for synthesizing industrial hydrocarbons, including plastics, so that they are optimized to use the types of chemicals that microbes normally produce, rather than altering microbial products to fit into existing synthetic processes.
“There’s a lot of interest in the question, ‘What if we look at entirely new polymer structures?’,” she said. “Can we make monomers from glucose by fermentation for plastics with similar properties to the plastics that we use today, but not the same structures as polyethylene or polypropylene, which are not easy to recycle.”

Prevalence, deaths and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) due to musculoskeletal disorders for 195 countries and territories 1990‐2017. Arthritis & Rheumatology, 2020; DOI: 10.1002/art.41571
For the analysis, researchers examined data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, which assessed the extent of diseases and injuries across 21 regions and 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Musculoskeletal disorders included rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck pain, gout, and related conditions.
The team found that there were approximately 1.3 billion prevalent cases and 121,300 deaths due to musculoskeletal disorders in 2017, as wells as 138.7 million disability-adjusted life years, or the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability, or early death. The burden of these diseases generally increased with age for both sexes, was more prevalent among females, and was higher in developed countries.
“Our study describes the enormous global burden of disability from musculoskeletal conditions in a single paper,” said senior author Rachelle Buchbinder, MD, of the Cabrini Institute and Monash University, in Australia. “These conditions are under-recognized despite their enormous costs to individuals, the economy, and the health system. Also, there has been a lack of any significant decline in the burden from these conditions over time, which means that there is still insufficient emphasis on addressing the problem.”
Dr. Buchbinder noted that policy makers must be made aware of the size of this growing problem, especially in light of rapidly aging populations around the world. “A global response is needed, and this should be integrated with other strategies that can address some of the modifiable and important risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders, including obesity, poor nutrition, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles,” she said. “As well, there should be an emphasis on reducing low-value care for some of the most burdensome conditions such as low back pain and osteoarthritis that is contributing to the problem.”
The authors also stressed the need for standardized methods for collecting data on the prevalence and impact of musculoskeletal disorders across the world.
