A selection of prominent Utah writers from the Utah@125 project—a collection of 125-word essays and poems to celebrate Utah—will present eight simultaneous readings (plus a ninth virtual reading) at independent book stores around the state on Saturday, April 30, 2022 (Independent Bookstore Day, duh). The event is (we think) the first-ever simultaneous series of readings at multiple bookstores across the state. Among the readers will be former Utah poet laureates, national award-winning slam poets, prominent Utah journalists (including Salt Lake magazine’s editor Jeremy Pugh), award-winning fiction writers, poets, and essayists.
More than 45 writers, five or more in each location, will read their 125-word pieces at seven Utah bookstores at 3 p.m. The readings will take place on Saturday, April 30 in Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Sandy, and Provo bookstores. Plus: There will be a virtual Zoom reading (link here) at 3 p.m. hosted by Torrey House Press, and an additional Salt Lake City reading at 5 p.m. at Weller Book Works.
“The cool thing about these readings is the idea of Utah stories being told by writers across the state—at the same time,” said Anne Holman, co-owner of The King’s English Bookshop, who partnered with the Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement to schedule the events. “I can’t think of a better way to represent the diversity of Utah’s literary voices, as well as the strength of our bookstores.”
All of the Utah@125 readings—commissioned as part of the state’s Thrive125 celebration—are free.

The month of May is here and that means streaming subscribers are in for a big month filled with new entertainment to enjoy. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+, and Prime Video are all preparing for a horde of new movies and TV shows over the course of May. Whether you’re into popular action movies from years past or you get excited about buzzy new original shows, there’s something to look forward to next month.
Disney+ has a few titles worth marking the calendar for in May. The month will kick off with the finale of Moon Knight, the acclaimed new Marvel series, on May 4th. Later in the month, the new Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers movie will debut exclusively on the service, followed by the premiere of the highly anticipated Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi.
May 27th might be the single biggest day for streaming we’ve seen in quite a long time. The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi debut on Disney+, while the first half of Stranger Things Season 4 are released on Netflix. Two of the most talked-about new shows of the entire year are arriving on the same day.
You can check out the full May streaming calendar below!

When it comes to the horror genre, many subgenres exist that have become popular with audiences. Among them are body horror films which, for many decades, have entertained and repulsed audiences in equal measure and resulted in some of the most iconic and important horror movies the genre has witnessed.
Body horror in modern cinema has been utilized for both comedic and dramatic purposes, and over the years has evolved alongside trends in special effects as well. When determining which body horror films are the scariest, there are many subjective factors one could determine, from visuals and effects to plotting and creativity; this is a subgenre that’s constantly innovating. Let’s delve into the scariest body horror films and see which ones are practically guranteed to make your swin crawl and have you jump out of your seat.
5 The Thing
Being trapped in the arctic is a scary enough prospec,t but when you have a bloodthristy alien posessing people around you, it only adds to the discomfort. John Carpetner left his stamp on the body horror genre with his tense and atmospheric remake of The Thing starring Kurt Russell. The film relies on physical horror as the titular monster jumps from a dog to human hosts and evolves throughout. The practical effects here are grotesque yet creative, and are considered among some of the best effects in horror.
Related: These Are the Scariest Movie Aliens and Extraterrestrial Monsters
Carpenter ratches up the intensity throughout, casting plenty of ambiguity on what form the creature could be taking. The arctic setting adds to the bleak nature of the film and Ennio Morricone’s haunting score perfectly complements the mood. The Thing is an example of how the body horror genre can lend itself naturally to suspenseful and taut filmmaking, and Carpetner intelligently crafts an exqusitely unnerving game of cat and mouse. With its tight pacing, strong visuals, unique setting, and imaginative storytelling, The Thing is an example of the body horror genre at it’s most richly crafted, resulting in a visceral and captivating experience.
4 Re-Animator
Techinally billed as a horror comedy, Re-Animator still manages to racthet up the gore and thrills factor and deliver a nasty yet sly package of body horror. The film, which loosely plays off of classics such as Frankenstein and the H.P. Lovecraft book Herbert West: Reanimator, involves two medical students who discover a way to resurrect dead bodies and begin a series of tests which end up taking a wrong turn.
The film is a rollercoaster ride of outlandish visuals, dark humor, and a chilling cautionary tale about the dangers of playing god. While the film does have plenty of edgy humor, it isn’t without it’s moments of chills and suspense and offers up some truly inventive special effects and gore in the process. At a brisk 90 minutes, Re-Animator is an uncomprimising, hilarious, yet orignal dose of body horror that both delights and disturbs in equal measure.
3 The Fly
A list of the finest body horror has to offer couldn’t possibly not include the mastero of the genre, director David Cronenberg. While he has many films that could easily land on this list, his 1986 remake of The Fly feels the most appropriate, somehow simultaneously his most mainstream and perhaps his most icky. The film tells the tragic story of Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) who suffers freak accident involving an experiment and begins to slowly morph into a human-fly hybrid.
The film’s visual effects are notiably grotesque, but Cronenberg also utilizes the body horror aspect for geuine emotion as well. The way he depicts Goldblum’s character transformation slowly adds to the tragedy and suspense, so while The Fly delivers plenty of the gore and thrills fans look for in the genre, its mature storytelling and affecting performances elevate it to masterpiece status. The Fly proves that body horror can be equally adept at pulling the heartstrings as it is at turning our stomachs. Since then, it’s continued to be critically acclaimed and has joined the ranks of other great, award-winning horror films.
2 Invasion of The Body Snatchers
While this (alongside Fiend Without a Face) is more a progenitor of the subgenre, there’s no stronger case for body horror then your friends and family being impersonated by something possibly evil, yet looking no different. The classic sci-fi film Invasion of The Body Snatchers plays upon this concept to profoundly disturbing effect. The 1956 film offers a chilling commentary on McCathisim while also being an intelligent and crafty thriller that expertly plays off of paranoia.
Related: Giallo: The Best of the Horror Movie Subgenre, Ranked
While it isn’t as gory or sensation-driven as other entries on this list, it does have some nice, gross little special effects. The real basis of its body horror is the human impersonation angle here, taking the concept to a more personal and haunting perspective. The film has since been noted as a strong piece of social commentary that has continued to resonate. Invasion of The Body Snatchers has been remade several, allegorically different times, most notably in 1978 starring Donald Sutherland. As an example of body horror, Invasion of The Body Snatchers is still regarded as a masterwork.
1 Slither
Long before he became known for his work on franchises such as Guardians of The Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, director James Gunn crafted a chilling, edgy yet darkly comic piece of body horror known as Slither. In the vein of classics like The Thing, the film involves a parasitic alien that begins to possess a small town. Slither works thanks to its impressive effects and clever set pieces, along with it’s respect for the genre. The self-aware nature of Slither allows it to bypass much of the cliches and conventions and offer up a fresh and exciting experience.
For fans of body horror, it provides the gore, thrills, and suspense required but with an artistry and personality that’s truly invigorating. For those looking for an underrated gem to add to the body horror catalog, Slither is a worthy choice that more than 15 years later still holds up as a cult classic.

This week on Shudder, the horror-centric subscription streaming service available through Amazon Prime, the fourth episode (of a five-episode second season) of Cursed Films drops. The episode covers Wes Craven’s 1988 voodoo horror film The Serpent and the Rainbow, and deals with, among other strange occurrences during the filming, the fact that the screenwriter Richard Maxwell at one point believed that he had been possessed by some kind of Haitian demon, and had to leave the production. But crucially, what the show – directed, edited, and written by Jay Cheel – doesn’t do is pretend that Maxwell actually was possessed. What it does do, in this and all other episodes from both seasons, is explore how strange yet explicable occurrences — and occasionally horrible tragedies — can plague the making of certain films, and how these can cause myths to arise around them, and subsequently perpetuate a kind of mystical, conspiratorial form of critical thinking.
The first season of Cursed Films, which aired on Shudder in 2020 right at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, was heavily focused on “cursed” horror movies. That season covered The Exorcist, The Omen, Poltergeist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. As Cheel explained in an episode of Film Junk, the highly idiosyncratic film podcast he co-hosts with Sean Dwyer and Frank Knezic, there was an intended arc to the order of these episodes that was rearranged due to Shudder having streaming rights to The Exorcist, but nevertheless the philosophy of the show couldn’t have been clearer from the beginning. The title Cursed Films seems to have thrown some people off, believing that it took the idea of curses seriously, but all you have to do to figure out where Cheel is coming from is watch the Poltergeist episode. This remains my favorite of the two seasons, and details the belief the film was hexed due to, among other reasons, the tragic early deaths of Heather O’Rourke and Dominique Dunne. One reason some claim Poltergeist was cursed is that in the famous climactic scene featuring JoBeth Williams’s panicked swim amongst a pool full of skeletons, those skeletons were real, not models (not an unusual practice), thereby bringing the wrath of, I suppose, the dead down upon the film. O’Rourke died of a rare disease, and Dunne was murdered by a stalker. In the episode, regarding these sad deaths, Craig Reardon, one of the film’s special make-up effects artists, says “The idea of having a few [real skeletons] on the set of Poltergeist and killing two lovely young girls is a pretty pernicious idea. It’s an insult to the memory of a very sweet little girl, Heather O’Rourke, and it’s worse than that: Dominique Dunne was strangled to death by her boyfriend, which had fuck-all to do with a skeleton.”
In season two, it would appear that, given the success of season one, Shudder has allowed Cheel to branch out, and cover films outside of the horror genre. While horror is still represented here – an episode about Rosemary’s Baby has already aired, and the last episode will take a look at the, to me, inexcusable Cannibal Holocaust – we also get explorations of The Wizard of Oz and Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. These last two are my favorites of the season thus far. Cheel has a particular sense of humor which he injects into the episodes on occasion (there’s a cut to a City Slickers poster in season one that killed me), and in the one about The Wizard of Oz he brings in comedian Gregg Turkington, playing the character of “Gregg Turkington” made famous on the web series On Cinema at the Cinema that he hosts with Tim Heidecker. On that show, Turkington’s version of himself is a clueless cinephile, a gullible film expert, who knows far less than he thinks he does and has shit taste. On this episode of Cursed Films, he shows up to praise the much-reviled Under the Rainbow, the 1981 Chevy Chase comedy that attempted to keep alive the legend that the actors who played the Munchkins in Victor Fleming’s 1939 classic went wild in their hotel during production. This, among many other myths surrounding Oz, are debunked throughout the episode, except by Turkington. The choice to bring in Turkington has apparently baffled some, to the extent that they think Cheel believed Turkington was on the level. But of course the assumption is that the viewer will get the joke, and understand that Turkington represents everyone who has bolstered this kind of nonsense for the past several decades.
The Oz episode ends with a long section about Judy Garland and her life and career after that film. There is, of course, a lot of sadness in that story, and Cheel unfolds it with great sensitivity. Being able to include this and the Turkington section in one 40ish minute episode, and make it all work, is perhaps his greatest gift. But he also knows when to step away from that kind of ironic juxtaposition. The best episode of season two, so far, is the one about Stalker, a film that, as anyone who’s seen it knows, has a connection to The Wizard of Oz. In this episode, Cheel deftly describes the making of the film, the near un-making of it, and the terrible circumstances which may have led to the early deaths of Tarkovsky and two of the film’s lead actors. Yet it’s also a tribute to a cinema classic, a one of a kind science-fiction masterpiece. The stories told throughout both seasons of Cursed Films are often tragic, even, at times, infuriating. But they are also illuminating, human, and humane.

Tom Savini is arguably one of the greatest living legends within the horror genre. Not only is he an actor and director but he is renowned as a visionary makeup artist for films ranging from Dawn Of The Dead to Friday The 13th. With a career spanning several decades, several of the films involving his prosthetic work have become either mainstream classics or cult favorites.
RELATED: The Best Movie Makeup Artists Of All Time, Ranked By Oscar Nominations
Be it the physical characteristics of horror villains or designing violence and gore, Savini’s filmography so far includes some movies that have become more memorable for their makeup effects than anything else.
10 Ted Bundy (2002) – 5.8
A dramatization of the life of infamous killer Ted Bundy, the titular biopic was largely a non-horror feature. Hence, this is one of Savini’s less-known works with his makeup limited to realistic violence. As is a common norm in his work, Savini also cameos in Ted Bundy. He is credited as “Salt Lake City Detective.”
While the movie largely drew mixed to negative reactions, Ted Bundy was still praised for Michael Reilly Burke’s lead performance. It makes for an underrated option when it comes to movies about serial killers.
9 Necronomicon: Book Of Dead (1993) – 5.8
Necronomicon brings to life the works of the literary master of horror, H.P. Lovercraft. While each tale of Lovecraftian horror deals with a distinct storyline, a common plot regarding the resurrection of a dead mother and her son is connects the three segments.
The anthology movie includes in its ambit creatures from hell as well as aliens. For such diverse elements, Savini conceptualised the extensive special makeup and animatronic effects.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
8 Two Evil Eyes (1990) – 6
One of Savini’s several collaborations with George A Romero, Two Evil Eyes is a joint collaboration between Romero and Dario Argento as they take turns to reimagine classic scary stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
As Poe’s work was heavy on macabre elements and grotesque bloodshed, even the two segments of Two Evil Eyes give enough room for Savini to work his magic, especially in the shocking final act of each story. From decomposed bodies to tree hangings, Two Evil Eyes has it all.
7 The Burning (1981) – 6.3
Heavy on slasher gore, The Burning is a reworking of the urban legend of the Cropsey maniac, a boogeyman-like personality from New York. Summer camp proved to be quite a popular setting for several teen-centric slashers. The Burning is no exception as it deals with a camp caretaker who is burnt beyond recognition after a prank goes awry.
RELATED: 10 Best Slasher Movies For New Fans
Years later, he plans to seek his revenge on such campers. The ominous creature born out of the “burning” serves as an interesting canvas for Savini to work while the movie also carries a good dose of the violence effects typical of the genre.
6 Maniac (1980) – 6.4
A psychological slasher with excessive gore, Maniac focuses on the bloody exploits of Frank Zito, a serial killer who murders and scalps young women. The gratuitous and hair-raising details of the murders lead to Savini relying on “rivers” of blood for each of the killer’s victims. Blood even spurts out of the mannequins that the lead character experiments upon.
Savini himself appears in the movie as one of Zito’s victims. One of his earliest works, the movie came out in the same year as Friday The 13th, another of Savini’s projects. While the latter has attained legendary status, Maniac remains to be one of the most underrated slasher movies.
5 Friday The 13th (1980) – 6.4
Despite its low budget, Friday The 13th turned out to be one of the highest grossing ’80s slasher movies. The subsequent horror franchise would be entrenched into pop culture with Jason Vorhees donning the hockey mask in the third part. However, the original Friday The 13th didn’t even have Jason as the killer, adding a plot twist that was quite revolutionary at its time.
With Savini being the creative mind behind the plethora of slashing and stabbings in the movie, Friday The 13th turned out to be his biggest claim to fame as a special makeup effects artist apart from the George A Romero movies.
4 Creepshow (1982) – 6.8
Another one of the horror anthologies that Savini worked on, Creepshow blends horror with comedy. The movie is a must-watch for horror fans for its talents alone. George A Romero and Tom Savini resumed their creative partnership while Stephen King got on-board as a screenwriter.
RELATED: 10 Stephen King Movie Adaptations, Ranked (According To Rotten Tomatoes)
Intended to be a stylistic tribute to the 1950s-era horror comics like Tales From The Crypt and The Haunt of Fear, Creepshow incorporates several larger-than-life comic-like effects. If one is to view the brilliance of Savini’s mastery of animatronics and horror make-up, Creepshow would be a perfect pick.
3 Martin (1976) – 7
Martin found Romero and Savini exploring the vampire subgenre of horror. When the titular character evolves from a normal human to a blood-craving vampire, the control over his urges forms the rest of the plot. However, in exploring the alienation of the vampire in a new town, Martin also explores elements of social satire.
While there is no doubt that Romero is a zombie maestro, his tryst with vampires was also quite acclaimed. With a lot of expected bloodshed by Savini, this also marked the duo’s first-ever cinematic collaboration. Not as famous as Romero’s other movies, Martin is still one of the best vampire movies that deserve more attention.
2 Day Of The Dead (1985) – 7.1
The third installment of Romero’s The Living Dead series, Day of the Dead is centered upon a group of survivors of a zombie invasion. As they hide in an underground bunker, they fight among themselves as well as the undead to decide the fate of humanity.
RELATED: 10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About George A. Romero’s Day Of The Dead
Much like its predecessors, Day of the Dead set the precedent for some of the best zombie movies to come in the subsequent years. The makeup of the undead creatures was handled by Savini’s team that also included Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, both of whom attained future fame for their work on The Walking Dead.
1 Dawn Of The Dead (1978) – 7.8
Savini could have offered his services to George A Romero’s zombie film career with the cult hit Night of the Living Dead. Getting drafted to the Vietnam War prevented this collaboration, but as Savini claims in his book Bizarro, he used his time in the War to influence his work in movies like Dawn of the Dead.
The 1978 zombie classic introduced several quintessential Savini elements such as blue-and-gray skin of the zombies, exploding heads, and so on and so forth.

It’s the end of April, and that means we are halfway to the best holiday of the year: Halloween. While it is mainly a time for scary movies, it is a great time to go to your favorite theme parks for some spooky fun. If you are a Disney fan, then you are in luck, because the company just dropped some news about their upcoming plans for Halloween at Disneyland.
The first major announcement is that Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party is back. This after hours event at Disneyland lets you party with one of the scariest Disney characters, Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and some other fan favorite Disney icons dressed up for the haunting occasion on select nights in 2022. On that same costume front, Disney also showed off what Mickey and Minnie will be wearing at the park during Halloween. Both are rocking adorable homemade costumes, with Mickey being an adorable pumpkin, while Minnie is a purple cat.
COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY
Also, if you wish you could have some Halloween fun at Disneyland right now, there are various different treats to warm your cobweb filled heart. From now until May 4, California Churro is offering a spooky churro — rolled in cinnamon sugar, cut in half, drizzled with peanut butter and chocolate sauce, and topped with orange, yellow and brown peanut butter candy pieces. This is a mouth watering treat fit for a Disney Halloween king, and will be sure to have you bounce around the park like you’re Jack Skellington discovering Christmas for the first time. On top of that, now through May 1, Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs is also celebrating with a very orange cheddar pickle dog.

Finally, the last announcement was made by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actress Xochitl Gomez. She revealed via video that her new character America Chavez is coming soon to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. Disney admitted that this was not necessarily a Halloween announcement, but it can be argued that superheroes are just as synonymous with the holiday as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers. Also, Multiverse of Madness has been described as the MCU’s first horror movie with “jump scare moments” and haunting imagery. Because of that, Chavez’s inclusion in this announcement is actually quite fitting.
It is never too early to celebrate Halloween, and the countdown to this devilish holiday has officially begun. Disney will be making more Halloween park announcements soon, and you can read more about the existing plans on the Disney Pakrs website.

Nope is the new movie from Jordan Peele who has transitioned from a sketch comedy genius to an excellent horror movie director. His latest movie is highly-anticipated, but many are still wondering what the title of the film means. Peele finally gives an explanation for the mystery behind his vague title.
‘Nope’ is the latest horror movie from director Jordan Peele
Peele gained the attention of horror fans everywhere with his first film, Get Out. The movie was a massive success and even earned Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. His follow-up, Us, also did well at the box office and received praise from critics and audiences.
His next film, Nope, doesn’t have many known story details, which makes the mystery even more intriguing. Nope centers around caretakers at a California horse ranch who encounter an otherworldly force that begins to affect the behavior of people and animals. The movie stars Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Steven Yeun.
The first trailer gave a brief glimpse of what we can expect from Peele’s latest. Not many story details were shown, but it appears to be showcasing a haunting, alien presence. Audiences will most certainly be yelling “nope” at the screen.
Jordan Peele explains the meaning behind the title ‘Nope’
On April 27, Universal held a panel at CinemaCon 2022 where they presented many of their upcoming movies including Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru. One of their upcoming movies is Nope. During the presentation, Peele said that Nope speaks to how the audience often reacts during horror movies. He wants Nope to be for people who are often skeptical of horror movies but still enjoy them.
“This film is definitely a ride. The title speaks to the idea of being in tune with what the audience is thinking and feeling in the theater,” Peele said (shared by Entertainment Weekly). “I know a lot of people who say, when it’s a scary movie, they say, ‘Nope!’ Especially Black audiences, right? We love horror but there’s a skepticism.”
Peele often finds joy in listening and participating in audiences’ reactions to horror films. He wants Nope to be a film that people can enjoy together and compares watching horror movies to an amusement park ride.
“I love a rapt audience saying, ”Nope!’ or, ‘Get out the house!’ I love to encourage that interaction because that’s what’s giving the audience a unique experience,” Peele shared. “Rollercoasters aren’t fun alone. Being scared isn’t fun alone. You need that energy.”
Is ‘Nope’ a sequel to ‘Get Out’?
While Nope does star Daniel Kaluuya, Nope is not labeled as a sequel to Get Out. Kaluuya will be playing a different character. So, don’t expect Nope to set up the Jordan Peele cinematic universe.
However, it could have themes similar to Get Out as Peele often likes to tie in his disturbing material with relevant social commentary. Nope also has a title that is something audiences often yell at the screen while watching a horror movie.
Nope arrives in theaters on July 22, 2022.
